The Main Maze

Getting started...

When we first open the book and start the Main Maze, the doors are locked, so we don't go through them yet. (We get to use the doors later!)

We go along the path to the first sum which is 2x3.

The answer is 6 so we follow the path to the hole with 6 at the bottom.

We then drop right down through three pages and land on the circle with the number 6.

The path from number 6 then leads us to the next sum which is 2x10.

The answer is 20 so we take the path which reaches the hole with 20 at the bottom...

The Mission

We are going to use the doors to work back through
the maze and find ZEDDY'S MISSING DIVISION SIGN.

The first job is to collect the KEY.

We start on page 37 and follow the path along the bottom. The key is down the hole.

The key will allow us to pass through the doors in the maze.

Once we go through a door, there is a trick to show us where to go next!

When we drop through the hole to get the key, we end up in the Meadow Maze (P34) on the path that leads to the door.

Now that we have the key we can go through the door, but which way do we go next?

The TRICK...
See what number is on the door, then head towards a number that divides by the door number.

The door we just passed through has a number 8 on it, so we need to find which path takes us to a number that DIVIDES by 8.

The only number we can reach that divides by 8 is 72.

We go up the path to number 72 and drop down the hole. We land on number 72 in the Deep Dark Caves (P32).

The path from 72 only leads to a sum, so we can't go through a door.

Instead we just work out 7x10 = 70 and then take the path that leads to number 70.

When we drop through the hole and land on number 70,
we are on the Polar Pathways (P28).

There are two paths leading from number 70, so we have
to decide which way to go. We could either go up to
the sum 9x9, or we can go through Door 11 and find
a number that divides by 11.

HINT: When we're looking for Zeddy's Missing
Division Sign, ALWAYS use the door if there is one.
(If we ignore the doors and do the sums we might
never find the missing sign.)

When you become an expert and you're making up your own
maze challenges
, sometimes a door can be a useful shortcut,
but at other times it might send you in the wrong direction!

...???

Eventually you will come through Door 8 in the Deep Dark Caves. You'll find that none of the numbers you can reach will divide by 8.

Remember the instruction on Page 37, because you have found...

THE DOOR THAT GOES NOWHERE!

Follow each path from Door 8 and see which is the highest number you can reach. Drop down the hole and you'll see the missing division sign!

Make up your own Maze Challenges!

Pick any two numbers in the times tables and try to find a path between them.

If you have a choice of doing a sum or using a door, you can decide which is the best way to go. The fun part is that it might be easy to go one way, but very difficult to find your way back again!

The two perfect numbers are 6 and 28. It's quite easy to get from 28 to 6, but much harder to get from 6 back to 28.

Have fun!
